ODM FAQ
1. Q: What is ODM smart lock development?
A: ODM smart lock development refers to a manufacturing model where the smart lock factory provides product industrial design, mechanical design, hardware development, firmware integration, mould tooling development, manufacturing, and testing services. Customers can customize branding, functions, appearance, packaging, wireless connectivity, and software platforms based on market requirements.
2. Q: What are the commonly used technical terms in smart lock ODM.
ID (Industrial Design)
Defines the lock's shape, material, color, and button layout. Decides whether users like it at first sight.
MD (Mechanical Design)
Designs all moving parts—gears, springs, clutch, handle return. Makes sure the handle doesn't sag, the bolt doesn't jam, and it survives brute force.
Electronic Hardware Design
Lays out the PCB with chips, fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth, and motor driver. Ensures stable power, clean signals, and low power consumption.
Firmware Design
The low-level code running inside the chip. It listens for commands, drives the motor, checks fingerprints, and puts itself to sleep to save battery.
App Design
The mobile interface users see—remote unlock, password management, access logs. Determines how convenient the lock feels every day.
Mould Tooling Design
Designs the expensive steel mold. Once injection molding starts, the mold produces hundreds of identical casings. It decides fit, finish, and production yield.
Reliability Testing
Tosses the lock into extreme conditions—heat, cold, humidity, repeated strikes, thousands of cycles. Makes sure it won't randomly fail after years of normal use.
3. Q: What is the smart lock ODM development process?
1. ID Design: Design the industrial design (ID) based on your requirement description or reference images.
2. ID Mockup: Create an ID mockup sample for your visual approval.
3. MD Design: After ID approval, proceed with the mechanical design (housing inner structure).
4. 3D Prototype: 3D print the MD prototype samples to check the fit and assembly.
5. Electronic hardware design: Electronics hardware engineer designs the schematic and PCB layout.
6. PCB Sampling: Order and fabricate the prototype PCBs.
7. PCBA Sampling: Mount components onto the PCBs to create PCBA samples.
8. Hardware Debug: Debug the PCBA hardware.
9. Firmware & App Development: Develop the firmware and the application software.
10. Function & Performance Test: Conduct comprehensive functional performance tests on the samples.
11. Mould Tooling: Design and manufacture the mould toolings for mass production.
12. Reliability Test: Perform reliability testing (e.g., lifespan, environment, UV cut).
13. FCC Rohs such certifications (ANSI or UL fire test)
14. Packaging & Manual Design: Design the product packaging and user manual.
15. Trial Production: Run a small batch trial production (pilot run).
16. Mass Production: Proceed to full-scale mass production.
4. Q: What is the difference between OEM and ODM smart locks?
A: OEM smart locks: You designs the smart lock; We only produce it.
ODM smart locks: We designs and manufactures the smart lock; the customer just brands.
5. Q: How long does smart lock development take?
A: It depends on product complexity, and on requirement changes.
Under normal conditions — with moderate complexity and no changes — a full ODM project typically takes about 6 months.
Typical breakdown (based on real projects):
|
Phase |
Duration |
|
ID design |
~1 week |
|
customer approval |
~1 week |
|
Mechanical design |
3–5 weeks |
|
Hardware design |
2–3 weeks (after MD concept) |
|
Firmware/software design |
8–16 weeks or more |
|
Mould tooling |
6–8 weeks |
|
Reliability testing |
4–8 weeks per cycle |
Some phases run in parallel. If requirements change, the timeline becomes unpredictable.
6. Q: What information should customers provide before starting development?
A: We have a detailed requirement checklist. Just select the options in it.
7. Q: How to choose finish Gloss ?
|
Feature |
Glossy Finish |
Satin Finish |
Matte Finish |
|
Reflection Clarity |
Strong, sharp reflection; obvious glare |
Moderate reflection; soft, blurred glow; cannot see clear details |
Almost no reflection |
|
Touch / Tactile Feel |
Smooth but easily sticky/smeared (from fingerprints) |
Very smooth, silky, and delicate |
May have a fine sandy or chalky (talc-like) feel |
|
Stain / Smudge Resistance |
Very poor (shows fingerprints, water spots, dust easily) |
Good |
Excellent (shows virtually nothing) |
|
Visual Impression / Mood |
Luxurious, bold, glamorous, cold |
Elegant, gentle, refined, premium |
Understated, stable, utilitarian, industrial-style |
8. Q: What are the advantages of developing a customer's own app based on our app SDK?
The cost is is much low, please compare the difference as below
